Preparing for Lane Rental: learnings for local authorities 

Striking a balance between essential infrastructure maintenance and upgrades while ensuring smooth travel experiences poses a significant challenge. To enhance network resilience, local authorities must develop effective strategies to reduce disruption on the road network, including that caused by street works. 

The Lane Rental scheme initative, regulated by the Department for Transport, aims to limit congestion caused by street works by allowing highway authorities to charge utility companies for occupying road space on the busiest streets during peak traffic hours. This encourages works promoters to enhance efficiency and identify collaboration opportunities, ultimately minimising the time spent on the road network.
